Superman’s Playlist

While there are a select few people out there who admit to not really caring for music (I don’t know many myself, as I choose not to associate with such types), there’s no denying the powerful role that music can play in our day-to-day lives. It can be a means of cheering us up when we’re blue, a way to get a party started, or even just a way to pass the time on a long commute. Love it or hate it, music is here to stay, and chances are, even you have a select few tracks that you consider your favs. But, have you ever wondered what other people listen to? Presidents and doctors? Pilots and firemen? How about superheroes? Surely with all of that saving the world, they need a couple of tracks to help them unwind or get jiggy?

As the most iconic superhero in the world, Superman is sure to have a stellar playlist on his chosen device, and below are some of his favourite tracks.

I Believe I Can Fly – R. Kelly

For any man to be able to fly, he surely has to believe that he can. R. Kelly’s 1996 ballad may have been the theme song for ‘Space Jam’, but is so much better suited to Superman. After all, he can fly! Movies and comic books always seem to showcase the brave, stiff-upper-lip attitude of our favourite superheroes, without really paying attention to their vulnerable side. Believe it or not, Superman has a soft spot, and doubts himself sometimes. This sweeping track helps to keep him motivated.

Hungry Eyes – Eric Carmen

You don’t necessarily have to have seen the hit movie ‘Dirty Dancing’ to know this classic track. Played at pretty much every wedding and every party you can imagine, there’s just something about the song that gets you in the mood to sway. Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, surely has hungry eyes when beholding the beautiful Lois Lane, but for the most part he has to hold back. When donning his famous red cape, it’s likely he switches the lyrics in his own head to hear them as ‘Laser Eyes’, which is also something he has the ability to show off (in the name of saving the world, of course!)

Under Pressure – Queen and David Bowie

When this track hit the charts in 1982, it became something of a theme tune for anyone and everyone who ever felt the stress of school, or work, or relationships, or any other human activity, really. If you think driving to work every day is stressful, just imagine how it must feel having to save the world on a regular basis! There’s no denying the amount of pressure our favourite superhero must feel, and there’s nothing like a bit of Bowie and Queen to help with that. Those quiet moments atop the Empire State Building are likely to see Superman pumping out this tune.

Telephone – Lady Gaga

Yes, people call the Ghost Busters, not Superman. After all, there’s no need to call him, he somehow always knows where the trouble is and how to combat it. But, with all that time spent in random telephone booths getting out of his office attire and into his red and blue suit, it only makes sense that Superman would have a song about telephones. Lady Gaga’s 2010 smash single is exactly the kind of track Superman likes to get down to. After all, you can call if you like, but there’s no one home, and you’re not gonna reach his telephone!

Superman – Five For Fighting

We would all love a song written specifically about us, and for us, and Five For Fighting’s ‘Superman’ is the track for Clark Kent. As any true fan would know, he is more than a bird, a plane, or some pretty face beside a train. It’s not easy being Superman, and no song portrays that fact more pointedly than this one. For those more sombre moments, when he needs to remember his roots, this is Superman’s go-to, for sure.
