5 Self Help Books That Give You Oomph

If you are like me, you have probably picked up a self-help book or two. You may even own a few; and you well may have promised to read a few pages a night to, you know, help yourself.

I have fallen asleep on plenty of self-help titles. Waking up in the morning disappointed that the content had not magically soaked into my brain. Disappointed that intention isn’t enough, and that you must read the books to garner the author’s pearls of wisdom. Sound familiar?

Perhaps the problem is that I’m reading the wrong self-help books (or not reading is as is the case) Maybe I need to read books written by normal people for normal people? Normal being a person who isn’t necessarily after spiritual enlightenment but does need assistance making it from opening their eyes in the morning to the bottom of their first cup of coffee. Anything extra is icing.

One of the greatest things about this book is that Rubin set out to improve the life she already has. She did not fly off to some Ashram in India to find herself, she looked at what she had, realized she was not paying attention to her life and started making the most of it.

The book is a recount of the year Rubin spent on her happiness project, full of examples of small changes that bring big results.

A Year of Yes – Shonda Rhimes

“If you want crappy things to stop happening to you, stop excepting crap and demand something more.” Or so says Sandra Oh as Christina in Greys Anatomy.

A Year of Yes is book all about stepping out of your comfort zone, introvert excuses and all, and saying yes to life. Or yes to saying no if that’s what a situation needs. You aren’t expected to say yes to everything, nor does she ever say that you should. Rather, Shonda gives us permission to say yes. Even if it’s a little scary, she shows us how a single yes can catapult you into the life you always wanted.

Another hit from this author, Gilbert’s book is all about being curious and facing down your fears and finding the ‘strange jewels’ within.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***k – Mark Manson

Once you have mastered this art, your life will be forever changed. Caring about the inconsequential footnotes of life sucks the life right out of, well, life. Get ready to get comfortable with being different and reserve your ‘f***s’ for worthy occasions.
